ORC Spring 2018 Week 6: Modern college student's bedroom REVEAL!

It's week six of the Spring 2018 One Room Challenge addition which means it's reveal week!

I'm relieved to announce that we made it and we're still alive. It's been a whirlwind of design decisions but most challenging were priority decisions as we had other higher severity projects going on around the house due to the recent move. We had to compromise on some of the design and furniture decisions until we could find the best fit for the room after the closet install this summer as well, so a few of the ideas we had initially listed didn't make it for this reveal. Regardless, I'm so happy that we made progress in A's room and hope to keep this momentum going throughout our home.

Onto the room reveal. We wanted a modern bedroom, incorporating lavender and staying with a light and airy feel. To maximize the airy feel yet ground the lavender, we choose a platform style bed in a velvet purple/pink color. This velvet is actually significantly lighter and purple in person but for some reason it shows darker and more red in pictures.

We choose to place the furniture pieces against the walls in the corners of the room to keep the center open and maximize floor space. We also hung the curtains at ceiling height to create the illusion of taller walls.  The walls are actually shorter than the standard eight feet.

Each corner has it's own zone/function and we stayed true to the minimalist styling and modern look A wanted.

A place to sleep and relax. We used layers of velvet, faux fur, linen and a soft throw for a cozy bed.

The hexagon table is the perfect shape and size to use by the bed as a night stand.  It has a marble top, large enough to hold a few items and a lamp.  The legs don't take up too much visual space and helps to keep the space open.

A study zone that doubles as a space for her hobbies.

A place for clothes storage and outfit selfies.

Thanks to my brother and sister-in-law for providing the Ikea wardrobe. It provides the perfect storage solution for the room because it's minimal but has a lot of storage space and was a big help towards the budget. We switched out the handles, bought some baskets and maybe I'm late on this, but did you know that Ikea sells painted wood hangers in white?  Yes, those are from Ikea.

Every girl needs a full length mirror and fun rug.  The only thing missing from this corner is a small stool which we haven't gotten yet.

Storage for not so pretty things.  Originally she wanted an open bookcase for storage but decided that she likes to hide all the clutter, so we opted for this dresser for now.  We're on the hunt for a bookcase that has drawers on the bottom half.  Most look like they belong in a living room or dining space, so we're still looking.

On top, we have a beautiful marble box to hold jewelry.

A drop zone for keys, a light jacket and the day's essentials.

The most important part of the room which she's absolutely in love with, the light:

I'm so happy to see that her room is now functional and beautiful. Pictures just don't do a space justice sometimes.

I never understood why some designers take on this challenge over and over again even after revealing how stressful it is but now I know. The gratification is priceless and documenting the whole process so you can be reminded of the progress you made and everything you dealt with throughout the whole process is worth it.

I hope you enjoyed seeing our progress, thank you for visiting and come again soon! :)
