ORC Spring 2018 Week 2: Modern airy bedroom in a small space

It's week two of the One Room Challenge. Although we didn't make any visible progress in the room, we did do some fun window-shopping for potential bedding and decided on a room layout.

But first, have you seen Target's Opalhouse home decor!!! I may or may not have dropped into several different Targets a few times this week to scope out all the different pieces in the collection.  I'm really loving the Bohemian vibes, the prints, jewel tones, and especially the velvet. These bedspreads are just so beautiful. I think we'll be using some of that velvet in A's room.

Most of the inspiration photos of modern style rooms that we pinned are of large rooms, with walls that go up and out to infinite. They also have loads of beautifully crafted architectural elements and furniture that probably cost more than what I make in a year.

A's room has no architectural elements that resemble infinite walls or airiness. Our space is a builder basic room and making it look and feel like those rooms we pinned is more than a stretch. Before we could decide on architectural elements, with the limitations that we have, I created all the room layouts that I thought would be possible with the furniture pieces that we'll be using. A and I reviewed how each layout could work for her considering what she needed and envisioned her room to feel like.

Immediately upon reviewing the layouts, A pointed out that she prefers that the bed is not placed up against the window.

One of the elements that showed up on almost all the photos that A liked were feature walls that had a some sort of light source lighting it up from below or above. We considered how the feature wall would look upon entry into the room and contribute to the balance of the room. It was a tough decision between having a feature wall or having floor space.  For now, the feature wall wins. Since this feature wall will take up a large chunk of wall space and we'll be placing this above the bed, we felt that having an equal amount of weight on the other walls would help to achieve the most balance in the room. This eliminated all the layouts where the bed wasn't centered in the room.

We ended up with this potential final layout.  The feature wall will be centered on the longest wall where the bed will be placed.  The far wall will hold the wardrobe and open storage.  A's desk will remain where she has it right now but we'll add some shelves above it to create balance and provide additional storage.

This is the plan for the room layout and it'll help us decide how much material we'll need to create the feature wall. We're hoping that this layout works as we move into finishing up the walls and making design decisions on lighting and furniture. We're not carpenters so I'm going to need a lot of time and luck with this feature wall.

During the week, we also looked into some potential wall finishes and colors but nothing is set in stone. The inspiration photo of Widowmaker (one of A's favorite characters from a game she loves) has the color palette that she wants in the room. As beautiful as purple might look in the photo, it may be overwhelming if we were to paint a whole room that color.  Purple might just be a phase too so we'll be going with a neutral color for most of the walls and only using purple where we can easily change it out in the future.

I hope to have some progress photos to share next week. It'll be a mess of a space and I won't have pretty photos for a few weeks, but knowing that we'll have a finished space at this end of this challenge gives me the energy to keep charging forward.

Thank you for visiting and checking on our progress this week. I hope to see you all again next week.
